Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is not a homogeneous disease. It can be broken down into three distinct entities, paroxysmal, persistent and permanent. In paroxysmal atrial fibrillation the episodes of atrial fibrillation come and go spontaneously. In persistent atrial fibrillation the arrhythmia continues unless, an intervention, such as DC Cardioversion or, antiarrhythmic medication is used to terminate it. In permanent atrial fibrillation the arrhythmia cannot be terminated with conventional treatment.

The treatment of atrial fibrillation needs to be individualized for each patient. Individualized treatment is based, not only on which form of atrial fibrillation is being treated, but also on whether the patient is symptomatic, the age of the patient, the risk of risk of embolization and whether there is a hemodynamic benefit to maintain normal rhythm for the individual patient.
