Dangers of Atrial Fibrillation

1When the atria are fibrillating they beat fast, irregularly, and ineffectively causing blood to pool and form clots. If one of these clots breaks loose from the atrium it can travel to the brain causing a stroke or can travel to other vital organs causing damaging to them. People with atrial fibrillation are five to seven times more likely to have a stroke than those that do not have AF.
2Atrial Fibrillation can cause the ventricles to beat rapidly for long periods of time and this can result in deterioration of the heart muscle function and subsequently congestive heart failure.
3Chronic atrial fibrillation is associated with an increased risk of death.
