Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial Fibrillation is the most common abnormal heart rhythm in the United States affecting over 2.2 million people. By the year 2040 it is estimated over 5 million people will have atrial fibrillation. When the heart beats normally, electrical impulses originate in the SA node, spread throughout the atria causing the atria to beat and pump blood to the ventricles. Electrical impulses then pass though the AV node which functions like the fuse box of the heart. From the AV node electricity passes into the walls of the ventricles, and make them contract and push blood to the body. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm caused by chaotic electrical activity in the atrium of the heart. The chaotic electrical activity then spreads through the AV node into the ventricles causing them to beat irregularly and often fast.
